After Ramadan, what next

Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

WITH the end of the blessed month of Ramadan and so will be 'Moon-fighting'. Doors of the hellfire will re-open and the devils unchained. Another 11 months to the next Ramadan, if we live to see it. When the Ramadan is over, do we return to our old traits' Allah legislated fasting during the month of Ramadan for us to gain taqwa. If we have gained taqwa, why should we then backtrack; No more prayers, no more Qur'an, charity, sacrifice, patience, self-control and other struggles' No, certainly not. If we return to our old traits then we have failed miserably, have not attained the essence of Ramadan and have only deceived ourselves.Ramadan will be gone until next 11 months from now, but fortunately we always have Islam - a practical guide. It is not one of those religions where you would confine yourself to a monastery and disassociate from the world affairs. Islam is about participation and the life of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and his companions only serve to attest this.So What Do We Do When Ramdan Is Over'Simple, implement Islam as a whole in our lives. This will involve sacrifice, struggle and concern for our fellow Muslims; these skills should have been picked up in Ramadan and now is the time to implement them. Abu Bakr RTA once raised an army to kill a tribe of Muslims who said they would follow everything in Islam but Zakat (obligatory charity). This is the way of a Muslim. Islam that is action-oriented.We look around ourselves and it's the same old scene. Muslim lands are still being ruled by self-styled tyrants propped up by same people who openly wage wars against Islam under the guise of spreading freedom and accountable governance. That is, freedom from the same tyrants they overtly support and prop up!As Muslims struve to get rid of some of these tyrants, other Muslims are being slaughtered in horrible ways that even hollywood has not yet invented: in Palestine, Lebanon, Kashmir, Chechnya, China, Uzbekistan and Thailand to name a few. Obviously, the style of this crusade varies from country to country. In some places bulldozers are used to crush the Muslims whereas in others the politics bulldozers are used to attain the same goal. The politics bulldozers are usually more dangerous as they are not so yellow and hence most Muslims don't spot them until they are six feet under the ground. Some Muslims are desperately trying to warn their fellow Muslims about this danger and alhamdulillah many Muslims are waking up but still large fraction will not realise until they are six feet under the ground. Naturally those trying to warn and expose will be attacked and called names. Muslim organisations that call to active Islam will be maligned and attacked from both within and without. This will continue and it does not surprise us. However, what we know surely at MPAC is this: if you say you believe but don't take part in a Jihad or sincerely don't wish every day that you could take part, you die with one of the traits of a hypocrite. There is a famous quote in the Qur'an for people who like to say but do not do, Allah says to them.Disu is the Director of Publication, Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPAC).
