Govts charged on sustainable democracy

Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

Governments at all levels have been charged to ensure fairness and justice in their undertakings in order for sustainable democracy to be attained in the country.A cleric, Mr. Noheem Junaid, gave the charge recently in Lagos, at the 2011 Annual Ramadan lecture, organised by Anwar-ul Islam Movement of Nigeria.Speaking on the topic: Quest for Sustainable Democracy and Good Governance in Nigeria: Issues and Solution from Islamic Perspective, Junaid said democracy should be seen as an avenue to truly represent the interest of the citizenry and not be taken as a do-or-die affair. He admonished Muslims who are in leadership positions to demonstrate faith in Allah in their various officesThe cleric traced the problem militating against democracy in the country to lack of sincerity of the political class and lack of political education on the part of the electorate.'People do not know their rights, they prefer to be given gifts and money to vote during elections for a particular party. The money that was meant for infrastructural development of the country has been lavishly spent on corruption and bribery,' he added. In his address at the occasion, the National President of Anwar-Ul Islam Movement of Nigeria, Alhaji Mubashir Ojelade, urged Muslim parents to encourage their children on the principles and doctrines of Islam for them to be able to lead a godly life.He also urged them to guide their children in the choice of careers and strengthen their faith in God.According him, the purpose of the lecture was to promote Islam as a religion of peace and to instill its principles in the minds of the ruling class in Nigeria.
