Nigerian boxing coaches are outdated -Ikhuoria

THE result Nigerian boxing team got at the recent 10th All Africa Games in Maputo, shows that the country's coaches lack knowledge in recent trend in the game, says former Olympian, Isaac Ikhuoria.He told Tribunesports in Benin-City that the coaches currently handling the team were not knowledgeable enough to be saddled with the responsibility of handling the boxers.The Munich 72 Olympics Games medalist advised the National Sports Commission (NSC) to engage a certified Amateur Interational Boxing Association, AIBA- Technical Adviser to instruct the Nigerian coaches so that they could be well-grounded on the current techniques of the game.'The arrays of coaches leading the boxers are quite outdated when it comes to the new trend of boxing coaching in the world."Some of them have stopped boxing in the last twenty years or more, they are no longer exposed to the new boxing rules, that is why they have to send them for training courses abroad.''The game of boxing has gone drastically from what it used to be in the past two decades, many changes have occurred, but our coaches are still living in the archaic age, not ready to move forward for onward training in their chosen profession at all'.'The National Sports Commission should help by bringing a well known and certified AIBA technical adviser to tutor and train our coaches what it entails in the global settings of the game. Some of them retired two decades ago when boxing is gradually gaining momentum among its pals in the world of sports. They are not expose to the new boxing rules and techniques obtainable in the game,' 73 AAG gold medalist said.
