Uzoenyi wept over W/Cup axe

Published by Tribune on Fri, 06 Jun 2014

Moments after the Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi made public his final World Cup list on Monday, one of the dropped players, Ejike Uzoenyi, broke down and wept profusely. The Rangers International striker, according to Tribunesport source who was with the team in Philadelphia, United States of America, where the team was based when the list was released, was in high spirits before the announcement as he was said to be hopeful that he would make it to the tournament which starts in six days. The source who pleaded not to be mentioned, informed Tribunesport that immediately the list was made public by the coach, the diminutive player broke down in tears and it took the effort of some backroom staff of the national team to console him.'You needed to be here to see how he broke down, he was just crying and it became so uncontrollable that the backroom staff of the team had to console him. He was just crying like a baby. Though everybody thought he would be in the team going by his commitment and determination to excel but as it turned out to be, he was dropped and there was nothing anybody could do about it,' the source said. Also, it was revealed to Tribunesport that the player, who along with other dropped players returned to Nigeria on Wednesday, was said to have locked himself up in his hotel room and remained moody.Other dropped players according to the source were said to have calmly accepted their fate but were not in good mood as well.Uzoenyi had earlier in the year played a major role in the home-based Super Eagles' third place outing at the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in South Africa, fuelling the impression that he might tie down a place in the Nigeria team to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
