Resident doctors resume duty in Lagos hospitals, after warning strike

Resident doctors in the government-owned hospitals in Lagos, on Thursday, resumed duty following the suspension of their three-day warning strike, over some unresolved issues affecting them.Investigation showed that doctors in other states also resumed duty on Thursday.A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited some of the hospitals reported that the doctors were seen attending to the patients.Hospitals visited included: Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba; National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi; Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute Meta; Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba.NAN reported that the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), had through its National President, Dr Jibril Abdullahi, on May 27, announced that the doctors would on June 2, begin a three-day warning strike.Abdullahi said that their grievances were based on residency training and the re-integration of the doctors into the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).Others demands include the payment of three months' salary arrears owed doctors in the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri and non-implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).In a related development, the premises of the Dalhatu Araf Specialists Hospital (DASH) in Lafia, the Nasarawa State Capital, on Thursday, was besieged by eager patients seeking medical attention, following the called off warning strike embarked upon by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD).Nigerian Tribune, which visited the hospital, sighted high turnout of patients eagerly waiting, with the entry points at the facility busy as medics attended to the sick.The state President of ARD, Dr Madubueze Sunday, who confirmed that the warning strike had ended, stated that doctors had resumed work as early as 8 a.m.He, therefore, urged government to, as a matter principle, fulfill its side of the bargain as earlier agreed.
