168 died in 143 road accidents in Bauchi 'FRSC

ABOUT 168 peoplewere reported inabout 143 road accidents recorded in Bauchi State between April and September, 2011, involving 1,107 people, out of which 699 had varying degrees of injuries within the same period in the state.Giving the statistics at the weekend, while briefing journalists in Bauchi, the sector commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Zakariyya Mamman, lamented the increase in road accidents in the state and cautioned road users against speeding, which, he stated, had contributed to most of the accidents recorded in the state during the said period.Mamman said the sector command would continue its campaign through the media and, as well, involve other stakeholders, with a view to curtailing the high prevalence of road accidents in the state, especially now that the ember months were here.'We recorded 143 accidents on major roads in Bauchi State between the second and third quarters of this year, in which over 1,107 people were involved. 186 died in the accidents, while 699 were injured. This shows an increase in the number of auto crash in the state between the first and the second quarter of the year 2011,' Mamman said.He said most of the accident victims were youths, who were between the ages of 18 and 35, adding that 'they were mostly students of tertiary institutions.
