Oyo govt counsels market leaders

THE Oyo State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community Development and Social Welfare, Mrs Tinuke Osunkoya, has said that the present administration in the state will continue to organise programmes to educate market men and women on the need for a free and fair election of new executive members of the state market leaders advisory council and other market leaders at the grassroots level, just as she said that it was vital to encourage all stakeholders to participate effectively in any electoneering process taking place at all tiers of government.The commissioner made the submission during a sensitisation programme on 'electioneering process, government policies as it affects the markets in Oyo State', at the weekend, at the Social Development Staff Training centre, Samonda, Ibadan, adding that for meaningful development to be realised, there must be good leaders in power and that all hands must be on deck to ensure good governance through good leadership.She implored all members of the state Market Leaders Advisory Council, presidents of all the market associations and other stakeholders to support the governor Abiola Ajimobi-led administration by being responsible citizens.She also cahrged them to help the government to achieve the implementation of the issues in the National Gender Policy Documentation such as domestication of the Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), gender equality, eliminating gender disparity, environmental sanitation, eradication of child abuse/street hawking, prohibition of gender-based violence, reduction of rape cases and spread of HIV/AIDS among others.Osunkoya, therefore, appealed to parents to take proper care of their children/wards so as to prevent them from being lured into kidnapping; assassination, thuggery, occultism among others.Also, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs R. F. Sali, said that Oyo State Market Leaders Advisory Council was inaugurated to serve as a link between the government and the people, to create conducive atmosphere and educated the market populace through the ministry on government policities and programmes.
