Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

Igbo students in higher institutions of learning have been advised to avoid any act capable of tarnishing the good reputation of Igbo ethnic nationality.Former President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Delta Central and South Zone, Eze Peter Chukwu, who gave the advice when Igbo students and alumni congress, Delta State University (Delsu) Abraka chapter visited him in Warri, enjoined them to always maintain the high standard the Igbo is known for over the years. He expressed delight that the Ohanaeze in the two senatorial districts was united, adding that the body was also happy that Igbo students in Delsu have organised themselves in a manner similar to other Igbo unions in the diaspora. In his lecture on 'Igbo in the Diaspora, yesterday and today', Eze Chukwu, who is also the Onyiesi Ndigbo in the District, noted that Igbo has made impact in everywhere they settled in the new world.According to him, Igbo played an immeasurable role in many Caribbean and Americas, explaining that on the Island of Jamaica in 1916, a group of Eboes (Igbos) had conspired to get their freedom by killing all the whites on the Island on Christmas Day.He, however, lamented the challenges being faced by Igbo in the diaspora who he said were attacked by their hostile neighbours, adding that Igbo traders in the Niger-Delta and in some Northern parts of the country were frequently attacked by youths in these areas, through religious extremism or illegal levies imposed on traders.President of the students body, Mr Chikwlu. Fidelis had eulogized the virtues of Igbo in the district, stressing that they decided to visit the Igbo leader to seek the way forward for Igbo ethnic nationality.
