Residents, motorists urge speedy rehabilitation of Mile 12-Ikorodu road

Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

RESIDENTS and motorists plying the Mile 12-Ikorodu road at the weekend, urged the Lagos State gfovernment to expand the highway without further delay. The residents spoke against the backdrop of an announcement recently by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, that the state government would soon commence the reconstruction of the road.Hamzat also said the expansion would accommodate the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor.Mr Bolaji Awodunni, a resident, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the road expansion would rid the road of incessant traffic gridlock. He lamented that travelling on the road on a daily basis had become a nightmare as motorists and commuters spent several hours for a journey that should normally take about 20 minutes.'The government should embark on the expansion of the road urgently; it is long overdue. It will reduce the hours we spend on the road,'' he said.Another respondent, Mrs Bose Olaiya, a trader, said the deplorable state of Ikorodu township roads had also contributed to traffic jams.'The government should not only carry out the road expansion, but also repair the township roads in Ikorodu.'The Owutu-Agric road is in deplorable state and it is a major cause of traffic in the metropolis. Traffic is held up for more than one hour everyday at this spot,' she said.A civil servant and motorist, Mr Solomon Oguntade, also lauded the readiness of the state government to repair the road, saying it would bring relief to the people of Ikorodu and its adjoining communities. He said the plan to extend the BRT corridor to the area would also help to decongest the road.
