BRINGING BOMBERS TO BOOK

Published by Tribune on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

PERHAPS nothing could proclaim Nigeria'svulnerability and helplessness than thevisitation of horrific infamy on the UN office in the Federal Capital Territory recently. Overwhelmed by its sheer wantonness, even President Goodluck Jonathan looked stupefied in a bold picture spread on the cover of a national newspaper.BUT the Police Commissioner of the FCT, Mike Zuokinuonor, had a word for reporters who were cheeky enough to ask him if he thought the police were on top of the situation. He said: 'Investigations are going on now. I want to assure you that we are going to pursue these people and their group and bring them to book. They are evil people and we are going after them. The driver (bomber) was cut into three pieces. We understand that the use of firearms is highly restricted at the UN House. That may have been the reason their security personnel could not stop him. I told you the IG has been here. We will bring these people to book.'CYNICS could not but suppress a chuckle. Before the bombing of the UN office, the police headquarters had been visited with equal precision and the policemen on duty, including those on the entourage of the IG, could not even blow a whistle.MAYBE when these evil people reach Aso Rock, the police will show us what stuff they are made of. Talk of false hope!
