ONE of the salient points to be distilled from the saga of News of the World, the 168-year old newspaper which died recently, by communication students is that a medium is as good as its credibility. If the tabloid could die in spite of its healthy financial status and bank balances, then any medium should be jealous of its credibility.INTERESTINGLY, News of the World died precisely on the altar of morality because the society in which it operates decided that its mode was obnoxious. Can a medium such as News of the World with a fat bank account suffer the same fate in Nigeria on account of morality' Practitioners of the journalism profession will however have to re-examine the ethical practices of their profession in the newsrooms across the country.ANOTHER salient point in the saga of News of the World is the point at which Deputy Commissioner of Police from the Metropolitan Police, Mr Yates, publicly offered apologies for his shoddy investigation which ought not to be excused. Here public servants routinely collide to cover their intransigence in a conspiratorial manner. The progress or development of a society may not be found in the volume of its natural endowments but in the subtle morality and quality of its people.
