Nursing council explains relevance of workshop on cervical cancer

Published by Guardian on Tue, 27 Sep 2011

THE need to update the knowledge of nurses and midwives and their educators on the killer disease known as cervical cancer, which afflicts women, informed the on-going training/workshop across the country, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has said. This was disclosed recently at Sagamu, Ogun State by the Secretary General/Registrar, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Mrs. Olatokunbo Olanipekun at a workshop on cervical cancer. She added that by organising the workshop for nurses and midwives, the Council was acting in line with its mandate of not only regulating standards in nursing education and practice, but also reviewing such standards to incorporate new trends and innovations.Olanipekun added that there was the need for practicing nurses, midwives, students of midwifery and their instructors to be abreast of recent development as regards cervical cancer, which has become a scourge, mostly in countries like Nigeria. She further stressed that through the on-going workshop, participants will be able to know the best ways to handle cases of cervical cancer in their patients, adding that the ravaging nature of the ailment has become worrisome. The Nursing Council chief added that the training has also become vital given the fact that there was new impetus at global level through the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce infant and maternal mortality, which is prevalent in developing countries. She said the workshop has been organised on zonal basis nationwide and therefore urged the participants to take the training serious as certificates will be issued after the workshop, but cautioned that such certificates will only be given to those who have excelled in the programme.'We will issue certificate to the participants after the training and I implore you to take this training serious as mere attendance is not enough to qualify you for the certificate. You must prove you have learnt something by exhibiting competence.
