Ministries partner on youth employment

WORRIED by the rising spate of unemployment in the country, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development has partnered with the Ministry of Agriculture on how the sector could be modernised to capture the interest of the youths and serve as an avenue for employment.Minister of Youth Development, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi disclosed during the closing ceremony of a two-week Skill Acquisition Workshop, held at the National Youth Development Centre, Owode-Egba, Ogun State for 30 female youths from the South West geo-political zone.Abdullahi who was represented by the Deputy Director (Vocational Skills) in the ministry, Mrs. Noimat Anibaba said the recognition of the fact that youths constituted one of the greatest assets of the country informed the priority attention the government was giving to them in its transformation agenda implementation.'This situation informed the need for my ministry to be repositioned in order to become proactive in its responsibility as a coordinating agency of government to enhance better livelihood for the young people through holistic policies, programmes and projects,' he said.The minister pointed out that the workshop was organised as a quick win for the female youths to support and encourage them in establishing their own small businesses.'No doubt, young women are more exposed to difficulties in most developing countries of the world, hence, the need for extra assistance aimed specially at empowering female youths for self and gainful employment as well as greater contribution to their community and national development.'My ministry will not hesitate to continue in its effort to improve the livelihood of the Nigerian youths through value orientation. It will continue to promote the youth entrepreneurship through its training and re-training to ensure sustainable youth entrepreneurship programmes and ventures,' Abdullahi said.He called on well-meaning Nigerians and organisations to join hands with the ministry at improving the youths who are the future leaders of the country.
