CIIN confab to explore insurance contribution to national economy

Published by Tribune on Tue, 10 Jun 2014

Experts in the insurance industry are set to converge on Lagos for the 2014 International Education Conference of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN), where salient issues affecting the industry will be discussed.Described as the flagship of the CIIN Educational programmes, the annual confab is the gathering of the top echelon practitioners and key operatives who hold the reins in their respective organisations. The 2014 edition, slated for 17th to 19th June, 2014, at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, will focus on the theme: 'Re-dimensioning the Insurance Industry Contributions to the National Economy'.The CIIN president, Mr F.K Lawal, who spoke at a press briefing in Lagos, said the conference was aimed at provoking the thoughts of participants who he said were key practitioners in the insurance sector to the buoying effects of the rebasing of the economy which would show the real contribution of the insurance sector to the nation's GDP that currently stands at about 1 per cent. He pointed out that the low contribution of the insurance sector to national productivity was always connected to low insurance penetration index in the country, but this he insisted could be reversed by operators.CIIN'S Director-General, Mr Kola Ahmed also said that the conference, based on its sub-theme: 'Paradigm Shifts in Insurance Education for Greater Relevance,' would provide other opportunities for practitioners to exploit the bountiful benefits in the insurance sector. Expected speakers at the event include Dr. Ayo Teriba, Chief Executive Officer, Economics Associates Nigeria, and Prof. Sola Fajana, Vice Chancellor, Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Osun State, among others.
