Gunmen, Fulani herdsmen kill 20 in Taraba

Published by Tribune on Tue, 10 Jun 2014

Thirteen persons, on Monday, were reportedly killed by unknown gunmen in Dampar, Ibi Local Government, with another seven allegedly killed by Fulani herdsmen in Donga Local Government Areas of Taraba State respectively.Chairman of Ibi Local Government, Ishaka Mansur Adamu Sambo, who narrated the incident to the Nigerian Tribune on Monday, said over 25 unknown persons believed to be gunmen came through Lantang, Plateau State, to neighbouring community border in Dampar Ibi about 8:00 a.m and started shooting sporadically at the entire community and killed 13 persons instantly.According to him, their motive, which was not ascertained, had left 13 persons killed, 32 seriously injured, with 29 houses completely razed. He said the ugly incident, which had caused hundreds of people in the community to flee the vicinity, had equally created serious tension in the local government, hence the increase of refugees in various public places such as schools, churches, mosques among others. The council chairman said the community, which was deserted since Monday, had been taken over by a team of security personnel to maintain surveillance.Mallam Sambo said the situation became worrisome because the community was taken unawares at the wake of the incident and called on Federal and state governments intervention on relief materials to enable the people to access food to eat.In Donga Local Government, it was learnt that Tiv/Fulani locals took their turn in the early hours of Sunday in the area, following a spill-over clash between two rival ethnic groups in Wukari and Ibi Local Government Areas leading to loss of seven persons at a spot.Confirming the update in the two councils, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joseph Kwaji, told the Nigerian Tribune that seven persons were killed and two injured in Donga Local Government, while in Ibi Local Government, he confirmed the casualty figure as six, with several others injured and houses burnt.Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, the state acting governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, was about to commence a meeting with traditional rulers, local government chairmen and top security officials in the state to review the security situation.
