Head of Service now to be recruited

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

THE FederalGovernment hassaid that the appointment of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation has now moved from selection to recruitment. The outgoing Head of Service of the Federation, Professor Oladapo Afolabi, who gave an insight into the process that led to the emergence of Alhaji Isa Sali as his successor, said the process was highly competitive.Afolabi spoke at the inauguration of the first batch of the Senior Staff Exchange Programme between the Federal Government and the private sector. He said about 13 of the permanent secretaries shortlisted were examined and after rigorous evaluation through written test, Alhaji Sali emerged. He said: 'Let me also seize this opportunity to tell you that the process of appointment of permanent secretaries, Head of Service, has moved away from selection to recruitment.'Because in recruitment, you look at all the attributes and you also bring something out of your head by yourself under supervision and now Sali has emerged. So, I want to congratulate the process and congratulate you for your success.''We shortlisted 12 to 13 candidates, all of them wrote about what value they had to add to this seed. It was a top competition but they were all very good. It is only one seat and any one of them should have been Head of Service, because they were all very good,' he said. The practice in the past involved the selection of a candidate out of the most senior permanent secretaries in the Federal Service.
