Power generation hits 4,300mw 'Ministry

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

THE Special Adviseron Media to the Minister of Power, Mr C. Adinuba, has said the country's power generation has improved from 3,800 megawattts to 4,300 megawatts (mw).Adinuba, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, on Tuesday, said the increase was due to the ongoing overhaul of turbines in power formations.According to him, power generation, from the ongoing overhaul of turbines in the country, was likely to reach 5,000mw by December. He urged firms which had disconnected from the national grid to re-enter, to make their business more profitable.According to Adinuba, Nigeria used to experience an average of four systems collapse every month, which is almost 50 system failures annually.'But that has been reduced drastically in the last few months. Our goal is to reduce that to zero. Some of the failures are caused by factors beyond our control, like a sudden shortage of gas supply to a power generation facility,' he said. The minister's aide said an additional 10mw would be generated from the Delta Power Station in Ughelli, Delta State, by the end of September.'By the end of the year, the station will generate additional 120mw, because its installed capacity is 900mw. From its sister power station in Sapele, we are expecting an additional 100mw this year, raising supply from this station to 252mw with an installed capacity of 1,020mw,' Adinuba said.'We are optimistic of achieving the target of 5,000mw this year and hit 6,000mw in 2012.'We are not preoccupied with just power generation, but also committed to the development of the entire value-chain in the power sector,' he said.
