Flood ravages 15 houses at Ode - Omu

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

No fewer than 15 houses have been reportedly ravaged by floods at Oke-Owu in Ode-Omu in the Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that property in the affected houses were either destroyed or washed away by the flood.Professor Olubukola Oyawoye, the Osun State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the weekend in Osogbo that the ministry acted swiftly to rescue the victims.Oyawoye said that as soon as the information reached her office, she quickly mobilised some medical personnel for a rescue operation. The commissioner, who lamented that children and women were mostly hit during the flooding, said that it took the immediate intervention of medical doctors to save their lives. She also lauded the efforts of the Ode-Omu community for assisting in the rescue operation, which she said, helped to minimise the effects of the disaster on the victims.Although, the commissioner confirmed that nobody died, many of the affected residents, who were saved from death were hospitalised after some first aid treatment.Oyawole, who warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into gutters, channels and riverbeds, said the people needed to be educated on waste disposal. She called on the residents to stop building houses close to streams as well as to desist from dumping refuse into rivers to hinder the flow of water. The commissioner said that following the incident, dredging of the rivers had begun to put an end to such a disaster. One of the victims, Taiye Dada, told NAN that the flood disaster was aided by a lack of good drainage system as well as waste disposal habit of residents.``The environment is untidy, in spite of the ongoing sanitation efforts being made by Gov. Rauf Aregbesola to ensure a healthy living,' Dada said.Chief Ademola Oyarounbi, a community leader, who is also a victim called on the state government to take urgent steps to curb the problem.Oyarounbi said that the disaster could be traced to the meeting point of two big rivers, Oloowa and Okun in the area.
