NIGERIA WILL NOT BREAK UP

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

IT was certainly not an auspicious time for a media chat. But President Goodluck Jonathan mustered all the courage in him to go through one despite all odds. The Boko Haram, a violent sect, had been having a field day and the security apparatus had been clueless. In fact, the National Security Adviser had just told the country that they were not prepared for the spate of bombings witnessed in recent times in the country. Jos, Plateau State, had been on the boil, offering the country a consistent propitiation of 'fresh crisis' with worrying impunity. The list of the odds is endless. It was certainly not an auspicious time.BUT President Goodluck Jonathan had been bitten by the bug of positivism. He did not despair. He looked sternly at the media representatives and declared; 'I disagree with that assertion. Nigeria will not disintegrate.' Bravo, Mr President, Nigeria will not break up as some doomsday prophets may have predicted. But Nigeria has broken down! Apart from the serious security challenges, the teeming youth of the country are despondent. The future is bleak and dreary. It was not President Goodluck Jonathan who caused it but they are yet to see a genuine positive action towards rescuing the country from imminent collapse. Having also attended school barefooted and with no bag to protect his books from being damaged by the perennial threats of rainfall in the Niger Delta, Nigerian youths are looking up to the president if peradventure, he could proffer solutions to their misery.
