Published by Guardian on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

THE Secondary Schools Essay Competition recently launched in Lagos by UBA Foundation, the Social Corporate Responsibility arm of the UBA Group has continued to generate interest and excitement among secondary school students in Nigeria.Reports made available by the Foundation show that it has begun to receive quite a large number of entries from senior Secondary School children since the calls for entries opened on September 12, 2011, even as more entries are expected before its deadline billed for end of October 2011.Managing Director, UBA Foundation, Ms. Ijeoma Aso, at the unveiling of the initiative in Lagos, noted that the essay competition, which is a follow up to the just concluded Read Africa Project would avail students in Nigeria the opportunity to win prize monies in the form of grants. 'The competition is coming on the heels of the Foundation's 'Read Africa' initiative conceived as a platform to promote creative thinking and the development of intellect among Nigerian students,' she said. The Read Africa Initiative saw the Foundation gave out literature books to schools in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. 'What we are doing now is to test the intelligence and ability of the students to think creatively,' she said at the launch ceremony.According to her, winners shall enjoy scholarships to Nigerian Universities and will be enrolled in UBA Scholars programme, noting that the gesture was in fulfillment of one of the pillars of thrust conceived by the foundation bordering on Education Empowerment. The Essay competition is structured such that eligible secondary school students are expected to send in handwritten entries on the topic 'Me and My Career' to the UBA Foundation's office in Lagos. Entries close at the end of October 2011 after which three selected Nigerian Professors will review the entries and select an initial shortlist for further assessment.
