Published by Guardian on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

HOST - Katsina, neighbouring Kaduna, and Safaz teams dominated the podium during the MTN/Katsina International Polo Tournament, which galloped off the Nigerian polo season. The tournament ended at the weekend with teams celebrating what is unarguably the most exciting polo fiesta in Katsina for years. Interestingly, before the commencement of the tourney, the presentation of the sponsorship cheque of N7 million was held on Friday at the palace of the Emir of Katsina, His Royal Highness, Abdulmumuni Kabir Usman.Katsina Polo Club President and former governor of Kaduna State, Lawal Kaita, who received the cheque on behalf of the club, thanked the telecommunications giant for identifying with polo in Nigeria generally and Katsina in particular. He said: 'We are happy to have MTN as a major stakeholder in our drive to develop the game of polo, which is not only the oldest sport in Nigeria, but also the most popular sport in Katsina.'The MTN Nigeria Regional Marketing Manager, North West, Aliyu Musa, who led top executives of the company on a courtesy call on the royal father, expressed the firm's delight at being part of the event for which Katsina Kingdom is revered. At the end of the competition, visiting Kaduna DeeBee Farms made history, winning the event's biggest prize - the Nigerian Cup, which is one of only four most revered polo titles in Nigeria. The others are the 300-year old Georgian Cup, the Emir of Katsina Cup and the Majekodunmi Cup.DeeBee Farms, which vied for its first Nigerian Cup title, made history as the quartet of Mohammed Baba Dawule, Hamisu Buba, Baba Kyari and Dawule Baba overthrew two former champions, Kaduna Profile and Rubicon, to clinch the coveted title.
