63 kids feature in Aces tennis clinic

Published by Guardian on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

THIS year's Aces High Performance Tennis Clinic and Championship ended recently in Lagos with over 63 children from across Lagos in attendance at the one-week exercise. The clinic cum tournament was organised and coordinated by Aces Tennis Services for players below 18 years. According to the coordinator, Abel Ubiebi, the participants were tutored on new tactics and techniques, while some of the products of the event have been representing the country in international championships.'Aces Tennis has a project where children are being trained for free. One of the products of the project is Joseph Imeh, who is ranked fourth in the boys' U-14 in Africa,' Ubiebi said. 'Imeh has represented and won many laurels for Nigeria. Recently, he was runner-up at Ekiti National Junior Tennis U-16 and semi-finalist at the International Tennis Federation (ITF)-organised U-18 championship in Cotonou.'The event was fully funded by the founder and coordinator of Aces Tennis Services and nine professional coaches volunteered to help in teaching the children. The children had four days of high performance training before a tournament was organised for them.'The winners of each category went home with trophy, tennis bags and other equipment. Also, we believe that government cannot do it alone and sponsors have been reluctant in helping Nigerian tennis. If we sit idle, the game of tennis will die. This prompted us to stage the event and we hope to continue.
