UBA, Fidelity on top, WEMA, Skye qualify

Published by Guardian on Wed, 28 Sep 2011

IT was a feast of stunning results on the last day of the group matches of the 2011 Nigeria Bankers Games at the weekend, with WEMA Bank upsetting defending champion, UBA, while Standard Chartered Bank went on a scoring spree to record the highest (5-) winning tally of the tournament. However, victories for Standard Chartered and Diamond Bank were not sufficient to get them the automatic semi-finals slots; they will play off for the fifth place later, just as Union and First banks - losers on the day - will slug it out for the seventh spot.Needing an outright win against an undefeated UBA in Group B, WEMA struck the right chords with goals from Peter Ajao and Lekan Akinlabi to run away 2-0 winner in the biggest upset of the tourney. Prior to the match, WEMA had drawn its two previous matches and the win brought its total points haul to five, just one behind group leader, UBA.Both teams thus qualified for the semi-finals while WEMA's Saheed Onatunde was voted the Most Valuable Player. In the other group match, Standard Chartered drubbed Union 5-1 but it was a result rendered inconsequential by WEMA's defeat of UBA.Ikenna Ene of Standard Chartered joined the list of MVPs, scoring two of the five goals on the day. Other scorers were Ndubuisi Omugu and Funlola Oni (for Standard Chartered), and Gabriel Edem for Union Bank. Kayode Agbalaja picked the MVP award for the encounter. In the winner-takes-all clash between Fidelity and Skye banks to determine the Group A leader, Fidelity nicked the full points thanks to the lone strike by Niyi Olukoya. Diamond Bank edged out First Bank 2-0 with goals from the man of the match, Solomon Aneke, and Odili Ogwu.
