Reps urge ASUU to suspend strike 'Unilorin dissociates self from strike ''UniAbuja not at war with VC

Published by Tribune on Thu, 29 Sep 2011

The House of Representatives, onWednesday, told the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its warning strike, now in its third day.It also urged the Federal Government to implement the agreement it entered into with ASUU in 2009.On September 26, ASUU commenced a one-week warning strike over the non-implementation of the agreement it reached with government on the improvement of the nation's education sector. The resolution emanated from a motion by Honourable Farouk Lawan (PDP-Kano), the chairman, House Committee on Education, which was adopted.Leading the debate, Lawan said that the strike embarked upon by the union would have serious consequences on the already battered education sector.Meanwhile, the University of Ilorin branch of ASUU has failed to participate in the nationwide warning strike called by its national body on Monday. The ASUU branch chairman, Sa'ad Omoya, said union did not participate because they had not been relating with the national body for the past 10 years.'We did not join the strike because we have not been relating with the national body for the past 10 years. So, their statement does not mean anything to us,' he said.In another development, Dr Clement Chup, the chairman of ASUU, University of Abuja chapter, said the union was concerned about the rehabilitation of existing facilities on the campus. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gwagwalada on Wednesday, Chup said the position of the union had been misconstrued to mean an opposition view about the school authorities' activities.
