Alleged forgery: CAC president, others get bail

Published by Tribune on Thu, 29 Sep 2011

A Federal HighCourt sitting inIbadan, Oyo State, has granted bail to the President of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Pastor Elijah Oluseye and three others over alleged forgery of the church's registration documents. The presiding judge, Justice Jonathan Shakharo, at the court sitting on Wednesday, granted the four church leaders bail on the sum of N100,000 each, with one surety on the same amount. The judge explained that the court granted the liberal bail because they were old and could not jump bail.Others charged with the president of the church were Elder Olabisi Johnson, Godwin Okemenke and Abdul Akeem Muhammed. They were charged on a four-count charge of conspiracy and forgery, but they all pleaded not guilty. The prosecution, led by Mr K.A Salawu, pressed a four-count charge on the accused. Before the charge was read to them, their counsel, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), had expressed displeasure with the manner the prosecution was handling the matter.Addressing the court, he said that his clients appeared in court out of respect for it, noting that there were processes to be followed before bringing the matter to court.'In this matter, such process has not been followed. The matter should have been brought through summons, but no summon was served on my clients. They were just trying to serve my clients in the court. Up till now, they were not served with the charge,' he said.Akeredolu further observed that the action of the prosecution ought to be condemned, saying that they should not be using the instrumentality of the police to harass the respondents just as they were doing.
