Yejide residents call for road, drainage rehabilitation

Published by Tribune on Thu, 29 Sep 2011

The residents of Yejide, in Ibadan South West local government Area of Oyo State, have called on the state government to help in the rehabilitation of the road in the area and in the construction of drainage.Speaking with Community News, Mr Samuel Olayiwola, a.k.a Baba Yejide, said ''this road has been in this condition for over three years and government has not made any attempt towards its rehabilitation. The major source of the problem could be traced to lack of drainage in this area and it is causing a lot of problem,'' he said. While reacting to the development, Alhaja Omo Ayibiko, a resident of the area, told Community News that ''there is drainage, but it is not wide enough to accommodate large volume of water whenever there was a downpour, making the road unmotorable.''She explained further that ''due to the situation of the road and lack of drainage, the recent flood affected us in this area, especially my house, as so many of my property were destroyed and if not for divine intervention, my life could have been terminated by the flood.''Another resident, who simply gave her name as Mrs Awoyale, said ''every year,we fall victim of flood. This bridge was constructed in 1996, alongside the drainage, but our inability to dig out the sand from the drainage caused blockage of water causing it to overrun the road. The pressure from the water led to the collapse of many buildings as the water also ran to many houses,''she said.''We are calling on the Oyo state government to come to our aid, as the responsibility lies with the government,' she explained.
