Kebbi distributes free seedlings to conserve environment

The Kebbi State Government has commenced the distribution of free improved varieties of seedlings in the 21 local government areas of the state to encourage reforestation.The Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ishaku Daudu, who disclosed this in Birnin Kebbi, said that 21 varieties of the seedlings, including 84,000 mango, 6,300 citrus and 6,300 guava seedlings, were procured for distribution.He said that the seedlings would be given to 10 beneficiaries in each local government, adding that each beneficiary would collect 100 varieties of the three species of seedlings.He stressed that the ministry would supervise the nurturing of the seedlings to maturity.Daudu said that the project was one of the programmes put in place by his ministry to salvage the environment from imminent degradation due to indiscriminate tree felling.He said that it would also serve as a springboard for increasing public participation in environment conservation efforts.He said that trees played tangible and intangible roles in stabilising the ecosystem, Daudu stressed that ``trees serve as our source of food, raw materials and the oxygen we breathe in for survival''.In his remarks, Gov. Saidu Dakingari stressed the need for aggressive tree planting, saying that his administration would support the ministry to conserve the environment.
