Aviation can contribute 25% income to GDPExperts

The aviation industry has the capacity to contribute over 25% revenue to government coffers, experts have said.The Programme Convener, Mr. and Mrs. Aviation Nigeria (MAMAN), Captain Mathew Ijachi, made this remark in Lagos, during the Nigerian Aviation Business Exhibition 2018 with the theme: Wings to Fly: Human Capacity Building: Key to Aviation Growth.The event, facilitated by the Nigerian-American Chamber of Commerce, (NACC), was sponsored by Lush Purple, Zenith Carex, Federal Inland Revenue Services and endorsed by the Federal Ministry of AviationAccording to Ijachi over three million people travel through the Nigerian airports on yearly basis on the average of a thousand dollars adding it will attract more people if the sector is well developed, it is huge revenue to the government, he further added.He said the key challenges in the sector included lack of competency, shortage of manpower, policy issues in the airlines, astronomical cost of airlines, political and environmental instability discouraging foreign investors.He said MAMAN was committed to bringing together professionals in the industry including pilots and engineers to look into the policies and issues that are affecting the industry and proffer ways to sustaining some of the airlines that we have in the countryWe have brought in policy makers, professionals, consultants and they are all listening to understand where the challenges pinch everybody and we think with that they can influence at different groups everybody and the larger business environment globally.The average airline life as of today in Nigeria it spans at about five to ten years and we think there is something wrong, the reason is because 80-90 percent of the industry is being driven by people who are just professionals in the copy, probably with some opportunities, he stressed.The Project Manager, Lolade Adenekan, also observed there hadnt been a progressive growth in the industry as according to her some of the airlines that had existed just about three years back either dont exist anymore or are struggling to survive.
