Nigerians can be part of transformation agenda if... ' Prof Adeniran

Published by Tribune on Fri, 30 Sep 2011

A former NigerianAmbassador toGermany, Professor Tunde Adeniran, has said the present generation can only be part of the necessary transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan if they appreciate the essence of unity, selflessness and the imperative of effective national transformation, in the interest of national development.Professor Adeniran, who said this in a lecture entitled 'Nigerian Universities and National Transformation: The Role of the Alumni,' at the University Of Ibadan, on Wednesday, said since the law of human progress suggested that man, as an individual, was capable of indefinite improvement or transformation, so were institutions and societies. The ambassador, who was also a former Minister of Education, said to transform the country, we must serve as calculators and conscientious monitors of what, in the final analysis, would determine the future of the coming generations and the fate of the country. He affirmed that a time of transformation was actually pay-back time, when restoration goes beyond the physical to the content, adding that it was the time to see through appearances, to deploy intuitive insights and utilise evaluative capacities of the universities.Professor Adeniran charged the alumni of the University of Ibadan that it was time to realise that the sing-song of rehabilitating physical infrastructure must be complemented with greater emphasis on continuous capacity building, mindful of the social obligation of human capital development, through youth empowerment.'For our universities to be relevant in national transformation, they would have to be restored to perform transformational roles,' he said.
