OGBEMUDIA'S THANKSGIVING

Published by Tribune on Fri, 30 Sep 2011

DR Samuel Ogbemudia, a Peoples Democratic Party leader in Edo State, must still be sad about the loss of two buildings belonging to his wife that were reportedly demolished on the orders of the Adams Oshiomhole- led government. He must be wondering why some political upstarts could show such disrespect to him, one of the founding fathers of the state.WHERE were these political brats when he was riding the horse of power as governor of Bendel State', Dr Ogbemudia must have wondered. He would also have mused if those people understood what Bendel, the state he governed twice, connotes or whether they knew that 'Up Bedee', as supporters of the defunct state-owned Bendel Insurance Football Club loved to call it, was twice the size of the present Edo State. Maybe that was the sin of Dr Ogbemudia for daring to think that because he governed Bendel, now Edo and Delta states, in those days, and built some of the infrastructure the state's modern day men are unable to match, he was the superior governor.THOUGH Dr Ogbemudia was reported to have asked the state government to investigate the issues surrounding the demolition ' the former soldier apparently was not taken in by the excuse the Edo State task force offered for the demolition' we are not sure if the Edo task force has the magic to restore the buildings to their original state. Dr Ogbemudia, must by now have learnt the dynamics of Nigeria's new politics of 'die and let live' as opposed to the rustic politics of 'live and let live' that was practised in his days.BUT he is lucky that it was his wife's buildings that were demolished. In today's politics of 'die and let live', he and his family members would have been lucky to escape the assassin's bullets. Rather than calling for an investigation, he should be thanking his lucky stars and planning a thanksgiving that neither himself nor his wife was demolished with the buildings.
