It's vintage, it's Emmy

Published by Guardian on Fri, 30 Sep 2011

APART from having fresh and daring sartorial creations, Emmy Collins brings to his style the same attitude and humour that characterise his work of art.Known for his effortless style, vibrant choice of colours, well-detailed mix and baldhead, the design is always the cynosure on the red carpet, event; even on the street.Partnering with The Silverbird Group, the designer recently announced his upcoming Emmy Collins Style Weekend, which holds at Silverbird locations from Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2, in Lagos and from Friday, October 7 to Tuesday, October 11, in Abuja. The brand will in addition to showcasing avant-garde inspired fashion designs, also launch 'Emmy,' a diffusion line. Designs in this line were created especially for the tropical market with the massive infusion of short-sleeve garments. With the designer set to launch his new collection and host a Style Weekend, he shares the secret behind his unique styles.Grab his Look Building a wardrobe around time-tested pieces, even with the slimmest budget, can inject your wardrobe with huge style returns for comparatively minimal costs. Go vintageJust like the designer, when shopping at any store, have a basic list of what you want and always go for quality items. He said, 'I wear a lot of vintage from Camden and Portabello markets, but I rarely have enough time to go sourcing for them these days.'Sixties all the wayTo get a little bit sassy, the 60s is a great era to draw inspiration from. No wonder Emmy Collins' style has it all. 'So, we look back to past eras for inspiration, we keep an eye out for limited editions, and we browse vintage stores regularly to get our hands on a one-off piece. The stylish designer always incorporate the 60s style into my work wardrobe,' he says.Tailoring in the 60s oozed confidence and style; there was a wide and eclectic choice available for anyone who wants to show off to the world that he or she knows how to dress. Edgy, elegant with a twistWe all want an edge to get ahead, and one way to make yourself stand out is to utilise items that other's may not dare to wear. He enthuses, 'my personal style at the moment is edgy, quirky and elegant with a twist. However, I can be very unpredictable. I think out of the box.'Let it fitThe fit is the most important thing in tailoring. If it does not fit right, it's not going to look right. Knowing your chest and waist size is the starting point, but getting the professional measure would be the most preferred. Once you know your exact measurements you can shop online or go into a shop feeling confident to buy a suit that's going to look ideal on you. Also, for the love of fashion itself, make sure the trousers fit on the waist and fall just on the bridge of the shoe, with the jacket fittings having some shape to it rather than a box shape.Suit it like the sixtiesJust like in the 60s, the designer is known for producing a wide range of suits, from one button, three buttons to double-breasted. His style certainly looks very imposing and gives off a very powerful vibe. Emmy adds, 'I love my suits these days. They are not your everyday business suits. There is always a tweak here and there' SunglassesEmmy Collins is a fan of super generic cheaply made sunglasses. 'Accessories add vital complements to your outfit, they give you a chance to show off your personality and draw the attention of the ladies, which is a great reason to make sure you're on point. Wayfarers, aviators, horn rimmed and other common styles are all options here. He says: 'I love aviators, but not very big anymore. I did the big ones years back and have moved on.'The neckerchiefThis neck accessory is grabbing at everyone's throat, demanding to be noticed. It is perfect for all season and versatile enough to be incorporated into any look. A 'necker' just sounds like a frisky teen; it's stamping its way from catwalk to high street and the wardrobe. Appealing to high street and designers alike, the neckerchief is certainly looking to the future as it adds texture to an outfit, layering and interest. They can add plenty of colours to a variety of patterns and hues. Flaunt it bold Emmy's style, especially his suit is all about bold prints. He creates something different from the classic plain suit' pin stripes and checks. First of all, bold pin stripe is a great choice for a business suit; it depicts seriousness. But for those, who are less confident in their dressing, it would be proper to go for a faint pin striped navy suit, which will not be so obvious as a bold black one.Jackets and blazersJackets and blazers are some of the most common pieces you'll find at a second-hand store or vintage shop. There are all sorts of styles and materials available, which means if you're a bit adventurous you can get something unique for yourself. The key here, like when buying any jacket or blazer, is to ensure the fit is proper. You should be able to pull a blazer or jacket rangingDetailed accessories'My shoes have to be unique. I love Italian shoes, especially those from Napoli. At the moment, I love Max Vere. I wear skinny belts.' He adds, 'I wear more leather/silver bracelets than wristwatches. My bosom buddy, Ifeanyi of Message Boutique, Ikeja, was shocked to see me with a wristwatch few weeks ago. But what happened was that I saw this wristwatch which I spent a king's ransom on and thought what's the point of buying it, if I don`t wear it. So, I brought it with me to Nigeria. Well, it's back to the drawer again.' Smell old school 'I'm old school when it comes to cologne. I love Allure by Channel, Roadster by Cartier. Once in Dubai, I got stuck in transit with a lady based in the US and she kept talking about the One Million Paco Rabanne, so, I went to the perfumery and bought one.
