Greensprings students appeal to govt over empowerment programmes

Published by Guardian on Fri, 30 Sep 2011

STUDENTS of Greensprings School, Lekki, Lagos, have appealed to Federal Government to create enlightenment and empowerment programmes that would help redirect the mind of the youths and engage them in activities towards realising the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).Students of the school, who represented Nigeria at the 9th Annual Youth Assembly, held at the United Nations (UN), New York, United States recently, under the auspices of Duke of Edinburgh Club, told The Guardian, that from the experiences they acquired at the conference, youths of the country have a stake in making the goals a reality. But, this, they said, is only achievable if the people who are committed to making the goals a reality are well informed. One of the participants, Olisaemeka Mmaduegbunam, who described the conference as eye opening and inspiring, said: 'there is need for government to create programmes for youth enlightenment. The present day youths are so obnoxious that they don't think independently. None of them care about community services, and things happening around them. The only thing on their minds is going to the best university and making good grades, at least for average Nigerian youths, while others have refused to think.''Oriana Jemide observed that youths in other countries are working hard to achieve the goals, 'but I think the reason is their environment. They are much more motivated than Nigerian youths. Most of them are already members of NGOs; some have executed projects; while some are leaders of different groups. People that are almost the same age with me have achieved a lot. Also, Toluwalope Alabi, who is passionate about the environment, revealed that most challenges facing the country today came as a result of the mistake the present leaders made on the youths, thereby urging government to make more investment in the youths.
