Published by Guardian on Fri, 30 Sep 2011

TO overcome the danger posed by improper disposal of nylon materials, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has challenged researchers and industrialists to come up with alternatives to polythene for packaging. The Jigawa State Director of NOA, Hajia Tani Umar who gave the charge in an interview with reporters shortly after the kick off campaign against indiscriminate disposal of polythene in Dutse, explained that nylon materials used for packaging had caused a lot of problems to the environment.'I call on the research institutes in Nigeria to put their acts together to find alternatives to polythene bags to tackle environmental hazards and the incessant flood which has claimed lives and properties''Polythene is a non-biodegradable substance, a substance which can stay for hundreds of years on the ground; researchers can transform the paper or leather materials to alternatives nylons,' she said.According to the NOA chief, 'it is a task for us 'Nigerians' to look for viable solution as we can't continue to fold our arms. She said the agency was not a research institute but it was given a mandate to re-engineer the attitudes of Nigerians and also propel the force of individuals to do the right thing. The Director admonished residents in the state to desist from disposing refuse especially polythene bags indiscriminately to avoid blockage of drainages and other water channels to avoid flooding.
