Anglican Communion Elects New Prolocutor

ON Tuesday, September 20, 2011, at the 10th General Synod of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, held at Vining Memorial Cathedral Church, Ikeja, Lagos, the House of Clergy voted for the election of a new Prolocutor. The event was occasioned by the sudden and painful exit of former Prolocutor, Ven. Alex Aduchie.Two top contenders to the post were: Ven. R. V. A. Adeyemi (Diocese of Ijebu South) and Ven. Prof. Israel Okoye (Awka Diocese). After the emotion-laden observance of a minute silence, in honour of the departed colleague, the house held a free and fair election.Okoye secured a total of 138 votes to emerge winner, while Adeyemi had 17 votes. With the result, Okoye becomes the new Prolocutor for the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.Ratifying the election on the floor of the Synod, the Archbishop, Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, Most Rev. Nicholas Okoh, said Okoye has all it takes to contribute to the well being of the church. He noted that he has character, capacity and courage to lead the clergy. The Primate enjoined the new Prolocutor to restore years eaten by locusts in the church and society.Okoye, a distinguished professor of Political Science, is the Archdeacon of Ugwu Oba Missionary Archdeaconry in Awka Diocese. He is married to Mrs. Faith Okoye. They are blessed with five God-fearing children.Okoye is an Alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is a tactical preacher and evangelist. He attended a graduate programme at Trinity Theological College, Umuahia.There is no doubt, the new Prolocutor will bring to bear, in his tenure, dedication, selfless services and good leadership as the new Chairman of the House of Clergy, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.Indeed, the task of a Prolocutor is enormous.
