I Will Restructure, Secure, NYSC, Says New DG

Published by Guardian on Sun, 02 Oct 2011

THE National Youth Service Corps scheme will no longer be an avenue for engagement of young graduates in cheap labour, only to be discharged and face unemployment. Besides, they will also be able to serve fatherland under an umbrella of security. These were indications during an interactive session the new Director-General of the NYSC, Brig Gen Nnamdi Okore-Affia had with reporters in Abuja at the weekend.Okore-Affia said: 'The two focal points that will guide my administration are restructuring of the NYSC and continued safety and well being of corps members.'He said state coordinators would give more details of a security arrangements that will now be put in place. According to him, in the new deal, relations of corps members will now be linked with a data formula that will begin with the registration of Batch C 2011 corps membersHe said corps members' next of kin would feature prominently in the fields that will be created to link the directorate headquarters in Abuja, especially whenever there is a distress calls. On restructuring of the scheme, the new DG said: 'We will now add value to the one year scheme to improve on skills of corps members so that they can set up their own businesses to address unemployment after service.'The light-complexioned DG, disclosed that his administration would not bow to demand to post corps members to states near their places of origin. He argued that such would destroy the original ideas of founding fathers of the scheme. With election over, the NYSC boss said there is no reason to exclude corps members from flash points during the last elections. The DG said the passing-out parade of Batch C 2010 members coming up on October 4 would be low-keyed.
