Poor reading culture, cause of WAEC, NECO mass failure 'Minister

THE Minister of Statefor Education, MrNyesom Wike, has identified poor reading culture among students as responsible for the mass failure recorded in the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) results in recent times.Wike made this remark at the weekend, at an Independence Reading Session, organised by the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with Explorers' Book and Reading Club, as part of activities to mark Nigeria's 51st independence anniversary, held at the Government Secondary School, Life-Camp, AbujaHe urged students at all levels of the educational system, to cultivate the habit of reading, saying that this would not only enhance their academic performance but also their thinking ability.He equally pledged the determination of the Federal Government to boost the activities of the National Read Campaign driven by the Federal Ministry of Education to promote a reading culture among Nigerians.He said the founding fathers of Nigeria were able to challenge the colonial masters for independence because reading had equipped them with the necessary knowledge and skills to do so.
