Ijebu-Igbo residents groan as banks remain shut for 2 years

Published by Tribune on Mon, 03 Oct 2011

Two years after a robbery attack onone of the new generation banks in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, all banks in the town are yet to re-open for business.Investigation by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed that the management of the banks operating in the town had decided not to return to business due to incessant attacks by armed robbers. Some of the residents who, however, spoke to NAN, expressed displeasure over the continued closure and appealed to the banks to re-open for business. They said the closure was affecting their businesses as they had to travel to neigbouring towns for banking transactions. It will be recalled that some robbers had two years ago, invaded a branch of a new generation bank in the town, killing several residents and carting away an undisclosed amount of money. The incident led to the closure of all banks in the town. But Mrs Folorunso Oshin, a civil servant, described the continued closure as 'annoying and embarrassing.'Oshin said she had to visit other banks in the neigbouring town to withdraw money from her salary account every month.'This situation is pathetic. Since the closure of the banks two years ago, each time I want to save or withdraw money have to travel to other banks in neigbouring towns for transactions.'This arrangement is not easy and that is why I appeal to the government to provide adequate security for the banks to re-open,' Oshin said.
