Published by Tribune on Mon, 03 Oct 2011

A local governmentaspirant was disappointed recently when residents of Abule Oki in Alimosho Local government area rejected about 5,000 mosquito nets we presented to the people to curry their support in the coming local government election.Community News learnt that prior to the day of the presentation of the nets, community leaders in the area had met and concluded that they would not support any candidate imposed on the people. One of the community leaders told community rulers that the usual practice in the area was that some people from another state would just come and become their chairman."We didn't normally have a say in who becomes local government chairman here.In fact, we don't usually know them. They would just come and we would be persuaded to vote for them and after election, we may not see them again. But this time around, we have decided that we are not going to do that. We are stakeholders, hence we decided at our monthly meeting that we must reject Greek gift from strangers," he said.Community News learnt that a chairmanship candidate on the platform of a party,(Name withheld) sent emissary to the people and gave about 5,000 mosquito nets with undisclosed sum of money, but the elders in the community rejected the gifts and insisted that the community would only vote candidate from the community."We are tired of having 'foreigners' as local government chairman because we don't always see them again after getting to office and that is really affecting the development of this area. We want to put an end to such situation.
