Ogun: Of insecurity and other distractions

Published by Tribune on Mon, 03 Oct 2011

It is a well known clich and acceptable grand norm all over the world that thefirst and the fore most responsibility of any given government is that of protection of lives and properties of the citizenry. Even in the old Greek city state, this remains germane and paramount. At any given time this can not be achieved, the state can be said to be drifting towards anarchy. And when anarchy sets in, the state can best be described as a failed state. Pray that Ogun state is not inching towards reigns of anarchist.Crime and criminality we want to admit have been part of human evolution. But at a stage under the last administration of OGD in Ogun state, crime reached a crescendo. At a point in time, banks close shops for more than two weeks in Ijebu axis of the state when armed robbers took over the reigns of powers metaphorically. The state took some precaution in response to the onslaught of the men of the underworld. Reprieve and a bit of respite came the way of the citizenry at least for sometime. But the dark days seem to be back. Just few days ago, armed robbers resume their reigns of terror in the state. The sent jitters to the spines of not only the citizenry but the entire security apparatus. They had field day raiding several banks across the length and breath of the state almost simultaneously. Several lives were lost in the dastardly operation not to talk of unspecified amount of money. The most pathetic case according to account was the case of a four year old boy who was caught in the midst of the crossfire at Ilaro. One of the robbers was overwhelmed with guilt and the enormousity of the damage he has done. He was said to have carried the lifeless body of the boy crying profusely and pleading for mercy and forgiveness from the mother of the deceased. What a pathetic scenario! We want to implore Governor Ibikunle Amosun to rise to the occation. The lives of the citizenry is too precious to be wasted by armed robbers even when we have government in place. People should not be allowed to resort to self help. That would be tantamount to failure on the part of the government. The governor was not elected to be an on looker or bystander as reigns of terror is been visited on the people. He is the chief security officer of the state. No amount of excuse, blame or insufficiency on the part of the police can erase that fact. The governor must not allow the state to return to Hobbesian Era where Thomas Hobbes said live was poor, nasty, brutish, short and survival of the fittest.Be that as it may under this cloudy situation, when a lot is begging for the attention of the governor, he can not afford to be distracted by sundry and mundane issues that constitute a clog in the wheels of whatever progress he intends to make. A sad tail of distraction was the case of one of the S.A to the governor who slapped a Permanent Secretary for whatever reason. The Governor will have to take full responsibility for the character flaws of his exco members. They were not forced him, rather he appointed them all on his own whims and caprices. Thus, the presence of people of questionable characters who lacks moral and ethical value are all the fault of the governor. Accordingly, couple with what Nicolo Machaeveli wants us to believe that the first valid impression people have about their leader come from their aides. We want to believe that the governor and his aides are not same of the same.Another distracting scenario is the case of self appointed, unofficial praise singers, hireling and the campaign managers of the governor on Facebook. These Unscrupulous elements and agent of social disorders have started nursing second term ambition on behalf of the governor at this stage when he is yet to find his feet. They 've started singing the tune of 2019 straight. These people are at best sycophants. They need to be ignored. They are bunch of self seeking set of people. They do not mean well for the governor other than their pocket and unsecured future. They are distracters.Peradventure, the governor starts nursing a second term ambition at this stage, that would be a great disservice not only to himself and his administration but to the people of Ogun state in general. At the same time that would amount to playing God. In time like this, the governor needs to be sobered and reflective. He must subdue his flesh and gather all his strength to give the people of Ogun the best they deserve. Distracters will ruin his administration if care is not taken. The case of the immediate past administration of OGD is still fresh in our memories. By the way, this later days sanctimonious saint 'Amosunest' are been monitored, at the appropriate time, we will unmask them to the outside world, if they fail to mend their ways and comport themselves to the minimum standard required of sycophants that they are.Ogun will surely be better!Dr Olusegun is the Acting President,Ogun Crusaders.By Babatunde OlusegunIt is a well known clich and acceptable grand norm all over the world that the first and the fore most responsibility of any given government is that of protec tion of lives and properties of the citizenry.
