Amaechi targets regular power supply, Imoke urges selfless service

Published by Guardian on Mon, 03 Oct 2011

GOVERNOR Chibuike Amaechi said at the weekend that his administration was targeting a 24-hour power supply in Rivers State by December next year. His Cross River State counterpart, Liyel Imoke, urged Nigerian leaders to be service-oriented to achieve the desired transformation of the country.Amaechi, who spoke at the 2011 edition of Nigeria's Independence Anniversary Celebration (NIAC) night organised by the Shell Club, Port Harcourt, expressed confidence that although the power problem cannot be fixed in a hurry, his administration would achieve the goal within the set time.He hinged his optimism on what the state was doing in both the new Afam power plant and Eleme power plant.'You know the power problem cannot be addressed overnight, but once our Independent power projects come on stream, power outage would be a thing of the past,' he said.Amaechi further stated that by January next year, about seven of the ongoing major roads and flyovers under construction in Port Harcourtwould be completed and open to traffic. He pointed to his administration's strides in various sectors, stressing that an improvement in security in the state contributed to the success of the 17th National Sports Festival in Port Harcourt, which was adjudged as one of the best.Amaechi added that residents of the state would from next January start paying the Social Services Levy, which was passed into law last year, stressing that the fee has becomecrucial to drive his free education and health care policies.Imoke, in a statement by his Special Assistant Media/Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Omini Oden, contended that after 51 years of independence and as we count the first year towards the nation's centenary, leaders at all levels must work selflessly to give Nigeria and Nigerians a better chance to compete in an incredibly competitive world by providing for their welfare, and creating the right climate for them to attain their potential and aspirations.
