CIBN regrets loss of jobs in banking sector

Published by Tribune on Tue, 04 Oct 2011

The CharteredInstitute ofBankers (CIBN) has bemoaned the massive loss of jobs in the banking sector as a result of the reforms being carried out by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the sector. The institute's president, Mr Laoye Jaiyeola, made this known while speaking on the outcome of the just concluded annual conference of the CIBN held in Abuja. While noting that the job loss was regrettable, he said the clean up in the sector would help the industry to play its developmental role in the economy. The CIBN boss stated that the institute had vowed to restore professionalism in the banking sector, adding that the move would help to reduce unhealthy competition among operators in the sector.Jaiyeola, who said it was imperative for the institute to instil discipline in its members, stressed that the institute would nip the practice of unethical banking in the bud, adding that any banker that is found guilty of unethical conduct would be severely sanctioned. He further said, 'the issue of banking has gone beyond balance sheet and liquidity. We want to look at the issue of trust because we need to rebuild trust and confidence in the financial system.'We have resolved that the culture of banking would be looked at and in doing this, we will ensure that the banking industry is professionalised.'We will make sure we continue with the culture of training and retraining because we have found out that having technical skills is not enough, we have to bring back true professionalism.'President Goodluck Jonathan had, while declaring the conference open, blamed unethical practices among bankers for the crisis in the sector.
