Repair our road, traders appeal to Gov Amaechi

Published by Tribune on Tue, 04 Oct 2011

Butchers and traders at Egbelu marketin Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, have appealed to the state government to repair the road leading to the community.Alhaji Samiu Ajulo, the chairman of Egbelu Abbatoir and Market Traders Association, who made the appeal in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt, said the five-kilometre road had become a nightmare for motorists.Ajulo said that the poor state of the road had negatively affected commercial activities in the community as customers from other communities who used to come to the market no longer did.``Before the rainy season, which worsened the state of the road, we used to kill and sell 45 cows and 35 goats daily but since the road became bad, we only kill about 10 cow and nine goats.``Customers do not come to market again. Those who have cars are afraid of putting them on the bad road and commercial vehicles also avoid the road,'' he said.According to him, traders who sell perishable goods are the worst affected by the dearth of customers.``Their items often stay for long periods without customers and, usually, they go bad and get thrown away,'' he said.Ajulo, who recalled that contract for the rehabilitation of the road was awarded some years ago, lamented that the project had been abandoned. .He appealed to the government to address the problem, suggesting that the approaching dry season should be used to work on the road to make it motorable. He pointed out that traders and residents in the community were tax payers and deserved some social services, including good roads.
