THE GAMBO GAMBLE

Published by Tribune on Tue, 04 Oct 2011

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan was perceptive in hischoice of Alhaji Mohammed Gambo Jimeta as a memberof the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy. The committee, which was recently reconstituted by the president, will be chaired by the famously adroit Mr Bello Adoke, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice. Mr Adoke has reportedly tied the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) up in painful prosecutorial knots and people suspected of corruption are not bello(w)ing in killing embarrassment as they should.THIS is certainly a calumny, a clear attempt to bell Mr Bello Adoke in order to string him up a pole of professional impropriety. Mr Adoke's wife calls him darling and only her opinion of her husband really matters.ENEMIES tried to abruptly end the glorious career of Alhaji Mohammed Gambo (as he was then known; he added Jimeta to his name much later) by claiming that he was not truthful when he said that the money allegedly stolen by his driver belonged to his wife. It was a lot of money in foreign currencies, a clear indication that the money did not belong to Alhaji Gambo. Everybody knows a Nigerian Inspector General of Police is a very poor person and Alhaji Gambo was the country's top cop at the time of the incident. His driver was a lowly sergeant.THE sergeant died during questioning. Alhaji Gambo had absolutely nothing to do with the vigorous tactics of the police interrogators. Some friends do not call Alhaji Gambo 'Jimeta the Just' for nothing.CHIEF Gani Fawehinmi was not one of such friends. He filed a suit which alleged unlawful killing of the sergeant. The dead sergeant's family supported the Fawehinmi suit and at least one newspaper published an editorial which called for a thorough investigation of the incident.THEN the dead sergeant's relatives made a U-turn of dizzying suddenness. They said they were no longer interested in Chief Fawehinmi's legal pursuit against Alhaji Gambo. Some uncharitable fellows said the dead sergeant's relatives were offered and accepted blood money. The truth must be that they did not want the case continued because they believed in the goodness of Alhaji Gambo.THE country's prisons may soon be empty with the good Alhaji Gambo Jimeta as a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy
