Rivers govt apologises over state of roads

THE Rivers State government has apologised to residents of Port Harcourt, the state capital, for the current state of some of the roads within the city, appealing to them for patience till the rainy season is over.The state Commissioner for Works, Victor Giadom; Commissioner for Information and Communications, Ibim Semenitari and that of Culture and Tourism, Dr Nnabuihe Nabbs Imegwu, said the state government ordered contractors out of site because of the rains.Giadom noted that the state government had realised that road construction works done in the rains do not last, especially those that would involve earth works, hence the decision to suspend all major and minor works, while assuring that in about 30 days, works would resume all over the state.According to him, some of the 230 ongoing projects across the state would be delivered on or before January, adding that the state government had decided to reconstruct and dualise the Iwofe/Rumuolumeni Road from Winpey Junction.'We have asked all contractors handling road constructions for the state to leave site for now that the rains are here, especially those handling projects that will involve earthworks. Works will resume in the next few days when the weather would have become fairer,' Giadom said.
