Apapa, Lagos Island East tango in Lagos Junior League

Published by Guardian on Wed, 05 Oct 2011

THE much-awaited Lagos Junior League will kicks off today with Apapa Golden Stars and Lagos Island East clashing in the opening match at the Campos Stadium. In a briefing to herald the commencement of the tourney, the league secretary, Taofeek Aromire, disclosed that 20 teams made it to the elite division - the Lagos Premiership - after the conclusion of the qualifiers in February this year. And with Apapa Golden Stars and Lagos Island East qualifying from Group B last season, today's match promises a rematch of their clash last season. Aromire assured that the management of the league has put everything in place for a hitch-free competition, 20 teams will campaign in the Premiership and League One while League Two will have 18 teams on parade.According to him, 'the Lagos Junior League is a regulation football league initiated for U-20 students, who have either passed through or are presently in the Lagos State School System.'The 20 local councils areas, 37 local council development areas with hindsight to identify, inspire and nurture latent talents to stardom, jointly incorporated the league in 2010. It also serves as a launch-pad for students for professionalism in sports and also showcases and exposes untapped talents to the rest of the world.'He added: 'The league, which is being structured like the English Premier League - where teams are based on cities - will comprise 57 teams representing each of the local councils and local council development areas in Lagos State.'The 57 teams participated in the league with the option of three privately owned teams subscribing to the charter of the league. They participated in the play-offs, which crystallised into what we are starting this year. We have the premiership, league one and two and the teams are expected to fight to escape relegation each season.
