Ogun to begin renovation of major markets

All is now set forthe renovation of major markets by the Ogun State government towards providing the enabling environment for good businesses and boosting commerce in the state.The State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Chief Bimbo Ashiru, disclosed this during a stakeholders meeting with market operators from Oba Lipede Ultra Modern market, Kuto, Abeokuta, in his office recently.In a statement signed the Ministry Information Officer, Qudus Kafidipe, the commissioner noted that the upgrading of existing infrastructures in such markets' would go a long way at improving on its current status which would include spacious parking lot and toilet facilities among others.He added that the move was necessitated in order to revive the old glory of these markets built by the Olabisi Onabanjo administration to open up the state and improve commerce and trading.The commissioner said, 'the buildings were already built on a solid foundation which needs not to be rebuilt but renovated.'He added that existing frame work of the state market board would be re invigorated to enhance its capacity, urging the market operators to be alive to its responsibility by paying their taxes and levies promptly.He maintained that all major markets in the state such as the Ita Osun market in Ijebu ode, June 12 and Ajilete markets have been marked for rehabilitation, calling for improved partnership and cooperation for delivery of more democratic dividends.The Iyaloja of the Oba Lipede market, Mrs. Tejumola Mustafa, in her response, stressed that constant monitoring and evaluation must be embarked upon to ensure good maintenance culture of the structures, restating their support to the state government's programme and policies at all times.Also the Iyalode of Egbaland, Mrs. Alaba Lawson, advised that un allocated lock up shops in the market should be re assigned, adding that cleaning of their environment must be prioritized as a clean market leads to a cleaner environment.
