JONATHAN AND HIS CRITICS

Published by Tribune on Thu, 06 Oct 2011

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan is aware ofwhat his critics are saying about him. Thepresident is weak, he lacks the political will and courage to deal decisively with some knotty national issues.AT an interdenominational service to mark Nigeria's 51st independence anniversary in Abuja recently, President Jonathan replied his critics. According to him, 'some people would want the president to be a troop commander who would crush everybody on sight.'BUT the president told his critics that he did not need to be a dictator to rule Nigeria. Going by the national experience, we agree that what Nigeria really needs to get things right is a gentleman who cannot even hurt a fly.MANY army generals had ruled Nigeria for years without making much impact. General Ibrahim Babangida was in the saddle for eight years. He was dislodged from office leaving the country in chaos at the end.GENERAL Sani Abacha ruled with maximum power and left the country worse than he met it. The eight years rule of the no nonsense General Olusegun Obasanjo did not bring the desired economic succour to Nigeria.ALL these former leaders were strong men and had the political will and courage to do the right things, but they did not deliver. It is only reasonable for Nigerians to be patient with the husband of Patience so that he can sort out the multifarious insecurity problems in a very gentle manner.THE Boko Haram and all other security challenges facing the country do not really need an iron hand as some people think. With Dame Patience at his side, and a lot of patience on his part, all those troublemakers will soon be tired without President Jonathan necessarily lifting a finger.
