NCS partners Turkey to boost trade, commerce

Published by Guardian on Thu, 06 Oct 2011

THE Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it is partnering with the Turkish Customs Administration to strengthen trade and commence between Nigeria and Turkey, an official has said. Mr. Joseph Attah, the NCS's deputy public relations officer, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, on Tuesday, in Abuja. Attah said that the partnership was part of the resolutions reached at a bilateral talks between the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko and the Under-Secretary of the Turkish Customs Administration, Mr. Ziya Altunyaldiz, recently in Ankra, Turkey. He said that the partnership between the two customs bodies was to ensure best practices in customs administration. Attah said that the aim of the partnership was to take the transformation process of the NCS to the next level and to boost trade and commence in Nigeria. He said that both countries had agreed to continue to strengthen relations on customs matters. The NCS's deputy public relations officer quotes Dikko as saying that the NCS had offered to deepen contacts in the area of trade and to establish a help desk for Turkish traders in order to strengthen the partnership between the two customs organisations. According to him, the Turkish Customs Administration has also offered training courses to the Nigeria Customs Service to boost its effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery. 'To train our officers and men with the aim of boosting our capacity to offer best practices, this is no doubt a welcome development. They (Turkish customs) are more developed than us (NCS), availing us of their own technical knowledge and professionalism will help boost our customs operations which will be to the greater benefit of all Nigerians,' he said. He also quotes Dikko as saying that the NCS will also seek further support from the Turkish Customs Administration to ease the imports of Turkish products into Nigeria and to increase flight schedule between Turkey, Abuja and Kano. Attah said that the Turkish Customs Administration had promised to forward the request to the appropriate Turkish authorities for necessary action. The next meeting between the Turkish Customs Administration and the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service will be held in Abuja in 2012.
