Abacha's ex-CPS, Attah, seeks better leadership, special team on Boko Haram

Published by Guardian on Fri, 07 Oct 2011

A LEADER of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) and elder statesman, Chief David Attah, has advised Nigerians to be disciplined and show love to the nation so as to break the vicious circle of underdevelopment in the country.Attah told journalists in Makurdi, Benue State yesterday that Nigeria at 51 was a time for retrospection for all citizens and those in the leadership positions to look inward to discover what went wrong so as to place the country on the right course.A veteran journalistand former press secretary to the late head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha, noted that Nigeria after independence in 1960 became pluralised along ethnic lineage to the extent that successive leaders began to think as ethnic champions rather than national heroes'Shortly after independence, we became more of tribalists than nationalists; we turned into ethnic champions but not united champions. I think we must make a duty to make things work at this stage by de-emphasising those things that divide us and encouraging the ones, which unite us. The era of sharing should be discouraged to move forward,' Attah stated. On the possibility of President Goodluck Jonathan realising his transformation agenda, he described the President's programmes as laudable, but noted that what he needs are sincerity, political will, and moral backing. He added that the socio economic paralysis in the country must be solved through good actions of the people.Attah, who decried the high rate of unemployment in the country, advised Nigerians not to blame Jonathan for the nation's problems because the environment under which he operates is bedevilled with distractions.
