Weve been wired to think our culture is evil

Published by The Nation on Sat, 18 May 2019

WORLD record dancer, Kaffy, has said that her project, The Dance Workshop and Confrence, billed to hold at Landmark, Victoria Island, Lagos, from June 2 and June 5, is to revive our forgotten cultural heritage in term of dance.I want to use this conference to revive our cultural heritage and bring it to the mainstream, she said.Let us strip off the areas that make us fear of practicing them. One of them is religion, where you have people say it is those who worship the God of Iron that dance bata. We have been wired to think that our culture is evil. And we are now imbibing the culture that teaches more immorality, that we can ever consume in a lifetime. But when we look at our culture, the discipline that is embedded in that black magic they talk about has sustain us better spiritually than the world we have been sold to right now.I think it is time to wake up.And dance is just the viable means to be able to do that. I went all the way to Ife to sit with the Oba. It was a miraculous meeting and when I spoke to Ooni, he said he is coming. I said to him, you that sits on a throne that carries so much power, and history that you cannot finish telling the story. And if you support this course bearing our culture, the history the children coming will hear in years to come will be that of shaku-shaku and that of bata, will never be heard of again. And because I really want this thing to be a hub; an international dance and culture information conference, I decided to go international. This dream started in 2015 when I was going from one local area to another in Lagos to take kids on the workshop. On the conference holding this year, Kaffy said she wants to make it bigger.Forward to 2019, my husband was wondering if I have gone mad, when I said I wanted it to be bigger; blow up the world. I decided that I want to involve more countries, between 2015-2017 that I have travelled out and taught in different cities and schools, and I discovered that they are recycling the wrong kind of afro dance. They just pick what they see on the internet and that is what they have. Fortunately for us, Africa is trending, so the consumption of our heritage and culture is heavy to the western world. The keynote speakers and instructors expected include the likes of Zenith Bank MD, Mr. Ebenezer Onyeagwu, the Ooni of Ife, HRM Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, US Consular General, Mr. F. John Bray, Creative Director for Beyonce and Destinys child, Frank Gatson, Mrs. Kay Ovia and Transcorp MD, Mr. Valentine Ozigbo. The workshop teachers include Marcus Cobb (US), DanceFikshun, Jusbmore, Dancegod Lloyd Ghana, Courtnae Paul, Sino Dinuywa from South Africa, Kwame Kideyez Osei (Germany), Ice Nweke and others.
